Father’s Day is a special day to honor our fathers, and what better way to celebrate this year than in Key West, Florida! Also called the Conch Republic, Key West is the perfect place to spend a weekend. This tiny island offers a laid back atmosphere and has something to offer for the entire family.

Top Attractions

While visiting, there are several fun things to do in Key West, Florida. Duval Street is the epicenter of Key West, full of fun bars and restaurants. It extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, which is why some jokingly refer to the strip as the longest road in the country.

One of the city’s most popular attractions is the house of former Key West resident Ernest Hemingway, who lived in the Keys for several years. Be sure to stop by and take a tour! Another popular Hemingway attraction is Sloppy Joe’s Bar and Grill, which was where Hemingway often wrote while enjoying a drink. Another popular landmark is the painted concrete channel marker. Don’t forget to snap a picture because when you visit, you are standing at the southernmost point of the continental United States!

Adventurous Dads

For the father who is looking for adventure and excitement, book a tour of the island on a Jet Ski! Jet around the 23 mile island led by a local tour guide, who takes you from the calm waters of the Gulf to the deeper water of the Atlantic! I highly recommend Sunset Watersports for such tours.

Another unique way to experience Key West is underwater. Try snorkeling or scuba diving to plunge into the world of tropical fish and colorful coral reefs! You can grab the necessary rental gear from Sunset Watersports as well. There are also ‘glass-bottom’ boat tours with Ocean Vue Adventures that are a huge hit with families.

Hook, Line and Sinker

Fishing is also a signature part of the Key West culture. For those fathers who like to fish, there are plenty of inshore and offshore fishing charters available. Nothing is more exciting than holding onto a fishing reel when a sailfish or other game-fish is on the line!

Lastly, as the day draws to a close, take a walk to Mallory Square to watch the glowing red and pink sunset as it dips beneath the horizon of the Gulf of Mexico. And of course, before you head back to the hotel, be sure to walk on Duval Street as it comes alive at night! Duval Street has some of the best island restaurants, not to mention the local, signature Key Lime Pie.
