Both the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola are “must-dos” when traveling to Atlanta, and most people know about these places. However, there are other fun things to do in Atlanta with kids that you should also check out. Here are some of my favorite activities for kids in Atlanta that you may not have have heard about but should definitely consider!

CENTER FOR PUPPETRY ARTS

The Center for Puppetry Arts in downtown Atlanta is an organization dedicated solely to the art of puppet theater. It is the first “puppetry center” in the United States, and currently it is the largest puppet theater in America.

The center offers performances, a museum, and even a “Create-a-Puppet” workshop. The $16.50 family show admission price includes access to all three which is a deal! The Create-a-Puppet workshop is particularly unique and allows kids 4 years-old and older to make their own puppets to take with them.

Most (but not all) performances are kid-friendly, so make sure to ask if it’s appropriate for your family, and you may want to ask what type of puppets are used as well. My kids particularly enjoy the shows with the large marionette-style puppets as opposed to the smaller hand-held puppets.

FERNBANK MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Our favorite museum for kids and families in Atlanta is the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. This is a natural sciences and history museum located in a beautiful residential area near Emory University. Permanent exhibits include “Giants of the Mesozoic” (a dinosaur exhibit) and “A Walk Through Time in Georgia.” There are several hands-on play areas for kids and a café to stop for lunch or a snack. This is a great museum for kids of all ages and adults as well.

LEGOLAND DISCOVERY CENTER

Located inside upscale mall Phipps Plaza, LEGOLAND Discovery Center is a kids paradise! It is not an amusement park, but it does start with a train ride into the indoor play area, and there is also a flying ride you power by riding bicycle wheels during the ride. There are plenty of places to build and play with Lego creations and there is also a 4D theater. Kids don’t have to love Legos to enjoy this play place, and I would suggest it’s best for kids between 2 and 12 years old.

IMAGINE IT! THE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF ATLANTA

Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is located in downtown Atlanta near Centennial Park and the World of Coca-Cola. This is a hands-on, interactive museum and play place where children can use their hands and minds to create, explore and imagine. My kids loved the permanent exhibits including “Tools for Solutions” and “Leaping into Learning.” This is a great place even for young kids.

There are so many interesting activities in Atlanta, and these are just a few recommendations to get you started if you are visiting the area. Hilton Atlanta is a central location for all of these attractions and many more, such as Zoo Atlanta and more fun things to do in Atlanta with kids.
