For families visiting Houston, there’s no shortage of fun activities. No matter where you’re staying in the city, these ten family-friendly activities provide fun for everyone on the trip.

iFly

With two locations in Houston – one in The Woodlands and one in the Memorial neighborhood near Interstate 10 – iFly provides families the opportunity to experience skydiving without having to board a plane. Participants gear up, take a quick how-to class, and go for a dive in a specially designed air tunnel.

The Woodlands Waterway and Woodlands Mall

North of downtown, The Woodlands has a lot to offer visiting families. The Woodlands Waterway is a scenic water feature connecting points of interest and hotels in the downtown Woodlands area. To get out on the water, kayaks are available for rent from the Riva Row Boathouse. Near the waterfront, The Woodlands Mall has more than 160 stores and is accessible by water or via the vintage, green Waterway Trolley, which takes visitors in and around the restaurant and shopping areas of Town Center.

Moody Gardens

On the opposite end of the Greater Houston area, Moody Gardens in Galveston is home to beachside outdoor entertainment including a water park, a ropes course, and zip lines, alongside a Rainforest Pyramid and an Aquarium Pyramid. Indoor adventures include 3D and 4D theaters and the Discovery Museum featuring seasonal exhibits.

Kemah Boardwalk

Further along the Gulf Coast, the Kemah Boardwalk is 20 miles from downtown Houston and features traditional boardwalk favorites like a roller coaster, amusement rides, and boardwalk games to test your skills. There are also restaurants overlooking the water and plenty of shops and kiosks to buy souvenirs. Keep an eye out for frequent live entertainment and seasonal festivals throughout the year.

Space Center Houston

The Space City is known worldwide for its connection to NASA, and Space Center Houston is the official visitor center for NASA Johnson Space Center. It’s chock full of interactive exhibits, behind-the-scenes tours, demonstrations, and movies aimed at educating the public on space travel and beyond. There’s so much to experience that it’s easy to lose track of time for hours without even realizing it!

Houston Museum of Natural Science

Spread across two locations, with one of the largest paleontology exhibits in the US and several traveling exhibits at any given time, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has more than enough for the whole family to enjoy. The Museum District location, anchoring Hermann Park, features a planetarium and the stunning Cockrell Butterfly Center where budding entomologists of all ages can enjoy one of the most beautiful living butterfly habitats in the country.

Hermann Park

One of Houston’s most vibrant parks, Hermann Park sits adjacent to the Texas Medical Center and the Museum District. Containing McGovern Lake, the Houston Zoo, a pedal boat lagoon, and vintage train, as well as a Centennial Garden and a traditional Japanese Garden, the park has something for everyone. There’s even an authentic pioneer log house that now serves as a museum. Bike or walk scenic trails and enjoy a plethora of public art installed throughout the park.

Astros Game

Minute Maid Park sits in the heart of downtown and is home to 2017 World Series Champions the Houston Astros. An Astros game is not to be missed in Houston, not least because the park offers tours of the facility before home games. Check out the retractable roof while watching the champs as they battle their way back to another shot at a series win.

Downtown Aquarium

Before or after a game, or really any time in Houston, the Downtown Aquarium restaurant and aquarium exhibit is a fun and educational place to have a meal while seeing more than 200 species of aquatic wildlife. Experience a stingray reef and feed the fish before heading outside to ride the carousel, the Ferris wheel, or one of the other outdoor rides.

The Escape Game

Escape rooms are one of the best ways to get a family working together to solve a mystery. The Escape Game hosts family-friendly, clue-crunching games set in themed rooms like the Gold Rush, the Heist, and the Playground. Work together to solve the room’s clues before a 60-minute timer is up, and free the family before time runs out!
