There are a dizzying number of wineries in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. I’ve heard there are more than 700! It can be a little overwhelming trying to decide which ones are worth a visit. And if you’re traveling with your family, the goal will be finding some tasting rooms that are amenable to having kids. Luckily for us, the whole state seems to be pretty family-friendly so that wasn’t hard to do. We felt welcome to bring our kids wherever we went. When taking a day-trip from Portland, here are four worthy destinations for kid-friendly wine tasting in Oregon wine country.

This winery is right off of the main drag and was the first stop on our tour. There’s a lovely outdoor patio that felt more like garden with a pergola full of flowering vines. We didn’t see any ducks in the pond, but my daughters enjoyed petting the koi fish that they fed with the free fish food that came with our wine. We enjoyed a flight of white and rosé wines while our kids looked for gophers (which they found) and ate honeysuckles off the vine. Idyllic.

The Willamette Valley is known for its pinot noirs, but all of the wineries we visited had a variety of different vintages to try, including sauvignon blancs and my personal favorite, rosés. Argyle Wineryis just down the road from Duck Pond and has just released some new sparkling wines. Their tasting house is a spacious, open-air pavilion, so there is room to roam.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite (or your kids need a change of scenery), you can walk from Argyle to Red Hills Market where they serve three hearty meals a day. They specialize in wood-fired pizzas, craft sandwiches (gluten-free options available) and they offer a kids’ menu! The best part is that they have a bocce court for a little friendly family competition.

Surrounded by rolling fields, this winery’s open-air tasting room is so inviting that we wanted to stay all day. They must have a reputation for being family-friendly because there were plenty of young ones in tow. There is a big tire swing and an oversize Jenga game to keep the kids occupied while the adults sample the wine flights and light hors d’oeuvres.

Perched atop a hill, Red Ridge Farms, home to Durant Vineyards and Oregon Olive Mill, offers beautiful views that visitors can enjoy on the lawn in Adirondack chairs, while snacking on cheese platters and freshly baked bread. After our tasting of white wines, we went exploring to find the fragrant lavender field, plant nursery and gift shop where we taste tested all types of vinegar, olive oil and salt. We purchased some of the delicious olive oil and salt we had sampled earlier at the tasting room.

Hilton Portland is located in downtown Portland and is about an hour’s drive from Willamette Valley where these vineyards are located.
