The grandeur of The Chicago Theatre, which opened in 1921, often leaves its visitors breathless.

The elegant lobby, majestic staircase and beautiful auditorium complete with murals above the stage and on the ceiling, are components of an amazing building called “the Wonder Theatre of the World.” An array of the entertainment world’s brightest stars and greatest productions grace The Chicago Theatre’s stage, totaling approximately 200 events per year.

A State Street icon, The Chicago Theatre is well-known among both local Chicagoans and visitors. However there’s much to learn about The Theatre, like these fun facts:

  • The 3,600-seat auditorium is seven stories high.
  • The vertical sign “C-H-I-C-A-G-O,” at nearly six stories high, is one of the few such signs in existence today. A symbol of State Street and Chicago, the sign and marquee are landmarks in themselves.
  • The Wurlitzer Pipe Organ has been granted city landmark status, the first musical instrument having attained such status. In most theatres, the organs were completely taken out. It is very rare that an original organ from the Movie Palace era is still in its original home.
