Love City Brewing Company, owned and operated by Kevin and Melissa Walter, opened its doors in April 2018 and they’ve already make a big impression! Their approachable beers and beautiful taproom have earned them high praise from beer-loving Philadelphians. Their work with local nonprofits shows that they are dedicated to being a part of the city, not just running a business. Owner Melissa Walter shares more about the philosophy behind the beer, and why Philadelphia is the perfect home for Love City Brewing.
Why start our own brewery? We could have just worked a steady job for someone else’s place. Why take the huge risk that comes along with starting a new business?
It’s hard to describe, but it has a lot to do with being a maker, not just a consumer. We can’t spend living our entire lives just consuming; not giving anything back or creating anything new. We look at the abandoned factories around Philadelphia that once housed great companies like Esslinger’s Brewery and Globe Dye Works. We wonder, why can’t this city be the “workshop of the world” again? We want Love City Brewing to be a part of this revitalization.
We’re incredibly proud of Philly’s history as a city that makes things. Traditionally, beer was the worker’s drink, and we know Philly workers enjoyed a lot of it (700+ breweries in this city before Prohibition)! Love City Brewing has something to offer to all the workers of today. Whether you’re an electrician or an artist, we have a beer that you’ll enjoy, and a comfortable, welcoming place to enjoy it. This idea drives our decisions on training, décor, beer recipes – everything really!
We also have a deep desire to give back to our city. My years in the mental health field showed me how much Philadelphia needs. It’s a lot – more than any one agency or program could ever address. And of course, one brewery isn’t going to solve the problems either. But Love City Brewing can be a source of support. Each quarter, we partner with a local nonprofit to brew a collaboration beer. We then donate 10% of sales back to the organization. Thus far, we’ve worked with Pathways to Housing PA, What Is: Mindfulness, and Least of Our Brothers. We’re excited to continue this work in 2019.
When Kevin & I look back at our lives, we see these beliefs have always been there. We really like making stuff and giving it to others to show we care. Kevin is an awesome cook and loves delivering extra batches of his recipes to friends. Melissa knits and crochets to show her love – what’s more comforting than a big cozy blanket or a nice warm hat? Love City Brewing Company is a natural extension of that for us.
