National Geographic describes Los Cabos as two cities in one. In San José del Cabo, you can dive into Mexican culture and enjoy elegant gourmet meals, and in the other, you have Cabo San Lucas, which offers lively nightlife and days of adventure and natural beauty. We do not want you to miss the best that Baja California has to offer, so we’ve prepared some great recommendations for you below to make the most of your stay in this unique destination where you will get the best of both sides of the coin.
Route of the Missions
Learn about Mexican evangelization through adobe architecture and rock art on the Route of the Missions. This route was established in 1697 with the arrival of the conquerors and passes through the Mission of San Francisco Javier, the Mission of San Ignacio, the Mission of San José Comondú, Our Lady of Loreto, Our Lady of the Pillar of Peace, Mission of Santa Rosa de las Palmas, Mission Santiago de los Coras, Mission San Luis Gonzaga and the Estero de las Palmas of San José del Cabo. The bohemian environment of Todos los Santos is the hidden pearl of Los Cabos. Located just 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas you will find this town of surfers and artists. Here you can surf at Playa Cerritos, do some window-shopping and stop by some of the various artisanal shops. You can also go hiking or mountain biking in the Sierra de la Laguna. You can even visit an abandoned port where a colony of sea lions live off the tip of Punta Lobos. You will also find Italian food at Café Santa Fe or pizza at Hierbabuena, and great coffee and nibbles at Baja Beans.
Thursday Art Walk
A must-do item on your list when visiting San Jose del Cabo is the Art Walk on Thursdays, and try to visit as many galleries as time allows. The streets open up to pedestrians so you can fully experience the world of local art in its different forms: sculptures, paintings, ceramics, jewelry and glass. Casa Dahlia Gallery exhibits the work of contemporary artists, The Wardrobe specializes in Mexican folk art, Frank Arnold Gallery presents his own oil on canvas and cast bronze artworks. What better way to wind down from the day than with an elegant dinner at The Sea Grill or Café des Artiste Los Cabos or El Matador.
There are few life experiences that are as captivating and mesmerizing as whale watching. If you are in Los Cabos, we assure you that you will regret it if you do not participate in this experience that will stay with you and your family for the rest of your lives. Between November and March, humpback whales arrive to these waters to give birth to their young. If you’re very lucky, you may get to see some from the window of your hotel. Be sure to ask the concierge at your hotel and ask for tour operator recommendations in order to schedule what will be one of the best excursions of your life.
Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere
They say that thermal baths are healing and rejuvenating, so you should not miss the opportunity to rest and relax in them. About 30 minutes from the San José del Cabo airport, in the town of Santiago, you can access the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere, which is an ideal day trip for connecting with nature. In addition to thermal baths, you can do hiking activities through the only oak pine forest in the region and if you are lucky, you can spot some glorious hummingbirds. This biosphere is the main source of water for Los Cabos.
