For all you beer worshippers out there, Houston has a spot ready and willing to provide you with the holiest of nectars: Saint Arnold Brewery. Grabbing a cold pint (or two) at the brewery with your friends and family for a lazy afternoon of board games and gossip used to be all you thought you wanted…and then the heavens parted, and our patron Saint Arnold bequeathed unto us a food menu fit to be praised.
In July 2018, Saint Arnold unveiled its Beer Garden and Restaurant complete with stained glass murals of their saintly namesake. The restaurant is reminiscent of an old world cathedral with its massive, iron-clad wooden doors and ceiling beams, ornate stained glass, and cream colored stucco. Ducking into the restaurant feels like a secret sanctified retreat from the outside world.
When you sit down at the sturdy wooden tables, your eyes glaze over as you realize that this menu was curated with care…and sass. Saint Arnold’s Executive Chef, Ryan Savoie, proudly penned all of the menu language himself, and you’ll likely chuckle at his wit as you read through clever item descriptions like, “Welcome to Texas, Shorty.”
There’s something on this menu for everyone – from spice lovers to cheese connoisseurs. And you’ll notice that there’s absolutely one thing that isn’t lacking as you peruse the possibilities: flavor. Saint Arnold doesn’t want you leaving the table thinking, “If only there’d been more POW!” It’s not their style with their brews, and it’s the same with their chow.
Start off your meal by ordering the Chicken Fried Pickled Green Tomatoes and the Curry Chicken Naan Melt appetizers – two items that are as far apart culturally as you can geographically fly. Fried Green Tomatoes are nearly as Southern as sweet tea, and each restaurant has their own spin on the fried fruit. Saint Arnold pickles their green tomatoes before frying them up and serving them with their freshly-made Million Island Dressing. If you’re feeling a little more Bollywood, the Curry Chicken Naan Melt is sure to entice with its heaping plate full of melty paneer, curried roasted chicken, and jhakaas minted yogurt.
For entrees, you’re going to want to nosh on the Texas Hot Fried Chicken and The Lockhart pizza. If you’ve never tried Hot Chicken, you’re sorely missing out! At Saint Arnold, massive chicken thighs are seasoned, fried in duck fat, and doused in a secret hot sauce that simultaneously leaves your lips tingling and your mouth wanting more. If you can break away from the blessed bird for a minute, you can cool down by tucking into the side of Raclette Mac & Cheese. Our tour of heat and flavor continues with The Lockhart pizza – a pie piled high with brisket, BBQ sauce, jalapenos, onions, and cheddar cheese. Aptly named for Texas’ own slice of BBQ paradise – Lockhart, TX – you’re sure to be hooked after one bite.
With a menu spanning appetizers, entrees, salads, sandwiches, and pizza, there’s sure to be something for every member of your group! Also, never fear, beer pairing suggestions for each item are next to their descriptions – now you’re able to effortlessly pair your House Cured Corned Beef Reuben sandwich with a beer that perfectly complements its mighty meatiness (spoiler alert: it’s the Elissa IPA). So, if you’re looking for a place to kick back and enjoy the fine Texas weather with a brew and some chew, make your way to Saint Arnold Brewery for lunch or dinner today.
