Centrally Located Hotel is Groovin’ to the 60’s
Walk in The American Hotel, A DoubleTree by Hilton and you definitely get a 60’s vibe. A Mid-century modern flair envelopes the hotel with architectural details, pop art and furnishings with clean lines. Images of music and movie stars of the day, vintage mini fridges, 60’s car themed headboards, an Airstream trailer serving as a poolside bar, along with historical photos reflect a story that only few hotels can tell.
The American Hotel, which has an incredibly convenient downtown Atlanta location, is a historical icon. Known then as the Americana, it was the first hotel in Atlanta that welcomed guests of all races when it opened in 1962 — and dare we say one of the few in the South. Civil Rights leaders and entertainers — black and white — loved coming to this inclusive hotel, including Elvis Presley, Carol Channing, President Jimmy Carter, James Brown, Nelson Rockefeller and Dr. Martin Luther King. Reportedly, one of the key reasons why the Milwaukee Braves chose Atlanta when looking to relocate was that all their players could stay at the same hotel.
After undergoing a recent $16 million renovation, this 315-room hotel has a warm boutique feel with 49-inch LCD TVs, a spacious work deck, coffee station, and of course, the fluorescent 1960’s mini-fridge. An outside pool and fitness room are welcomed amenities. And, you might need to work out, thanks to the hotel’s restaurant, the Fusion Room, which offers a full buffet breakfast option as well as cook-to-order selections.
What flourished in the 60’s? Cocktails and the Cloak Room Kitchen and Bar will take you back in time where martinis were shaken, not stirred. The Cloak Room sets the tone the second you walk in with a wall mural of President John Kennedy and Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev engaged in high stakes talks. Period music adds to the mood and several 60’s style TVs play closed circuit surveillance, current news and period television shows from the day. Even Lucy would love the Cloak Room!
There is so much to do in Atlanta and the American Hotel is a few steps away from all the action. It is in the heart of the business district and close to the Georgia World Congress Center and AmericasMart. For those who want to see all the sights, well, the Georgia Aquarium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Centennial Park, the World of Coca-Cola, CNNCenter, the Center for Civil and Human Rights and SkyView are right at your doorstep.
The American Hotel offers all of this — plus a warm, delicious chocolate chip cookie.
