It’s no surprise that Washington, DC is filled with amazing bars. It seems like you can find just about anything in this city. Looking for a sports bar for a specific team or an Instagram-worthy bar filled with floral wallpaper and hanging plants? DC has it. We decided to ask some of our Hilton Team Members for their best recommendations for all styles of Washington, DC bars.
I sat down with Joel Cannon, the Marketing Manager at The Madison, Portia Hood, the Director of Sales at Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington DC Downtown, and Jeanette Reyes, the Sales Coordinator/Social Media Champion at the Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC Georgetown Area, plus include some of my own Washington, DC suggestions!
My interviews gave me a new appreciation for the diverse offerings found in Washington, DC. Everyone I talked with seemed to have a different style of what kind of bar was their favorite. No matter how you enjoy spending a Friday or Saturday night, I guarantee Washington, DC will have exactly what you are looking for!
Joel Cannon – Marketing Manager
Joel Cannon from The Madison – A Hilton Hotel recalled all his favorite bars in Washington, DC to be the vast offering of distilleries on the H Street Corridor. A few of his favorites being One Eight Distilling, Republic Restoratives Distillery, and New Columbia Distillers. One of his favorite pastimes is making his own craft cocktail using these Washington, DC vendors.
Joel recommends The People’s Drug in Alexandria for the best craft cocktail. He states “it’s a classic little cocktail bar with all kinds of amazing drinks. It usually rotates ingredients seasonally, too.” He loves this bar particularly because it is off the beaten path and quiet enough to enjoy an evening with friends. “There is plenty of seating to hear the people you are with and enjoy a damn good drink!” Joel stated. Make the trip to Alexandria a date night with an overnight stay at Hilton Alexandria Old Town, just half a mile down the road from this quaint cocktail bar.
Portia Hood – Director of Sales
Stan’s Cocktail Lounge on Vermont Avenue is Portia Hood’s favorite bar off the beaten path in Washington, DC. She is the Director of Sales at Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington DC Downtown and loves Stan’s for it’s warm and inviting atmosphere. They make legendary cocktails that make people keep coming back! “Meet Me at Stan’s” has been generations of tradition for good reason.
If you are looking for the next best cocktail invention, Portia suggests Barmini by Jose Andres. This cocktail lab is a new, modern way to enjoy a craft cocktail by the famous DC Chef. With over 100 libations on the menu, you will be sure to find something fit perfectly for you.
If you are looking for an evening spent with friends, Portia recommends The Park of 14th. This award-winning bar is in the perfect downtown location to meet up with you friends from all over the city. They have different events happening almost every night, so you are sure to find something that interests your group.
My Own Recommendations
If you venture to the H Street Corridor to check out some of Joel’s favorite distilleries, make sure to grab a wine flight at one of my favorite bars free from tourists, The Pursuit Wine Bar. It is an adorable little hide away. We ordered wine flights and enjoyed small plates all night. Our other favorite bar tucked away from the crowds is Crimson View on the rooftop of the soon-to-be Motto by Hilton! The views of the monuments are wonderful, and they make fantastic craft cocktails. It has seating inside and out, so you can enjoy the views no matter what the weather is outside.
We all love a good craft cocktail. One of my personal favorite spots to enjoy one in Washington, DC is Whiskey Charlie, the rooftop of the Canopy at The Wharf. My husband’s old fashion came with a smoking cinnamon stick! We also love Calico in Blagden Alley. The bar is adorable, and the cocktails are even cuter. If you are a fan of Instagram-worthy decor with hanging plants everywhere, Calico is for you!
Is there anything better than a free Friday night with friends? When this happens for me personally, it seems to be that we always end up at American Ice Co. It’s a great indoor/outdoor spot in Shaw right next to the 9:30 Club. It’s a perfect spot to end the evening after catching a concert.
Jeanette Reyes from Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC/Georgetown Area recommends Café Deluxe in West End for interesting craft cocktails. She stated “they recently introduced ‘Passion Paloma which is an interesting blend of Blanco Tequila, grapefruit juice, passionfruit puree, and angostura bitters. When my friends just want to get together and unwind, we meet up here for an hour or two.”
No matter what your bar style is, you are sure to find it in Washington, DC!
