The Atlanta, Georgia area boasts a number of attractions. No matter what brings you to the city — business, vacation, professional sports teams, area universities, or local history — you will find a bustling town with much to do. Planning a visit to Atlanta with kids can be simple, and both the adults and children will enjoy the many activities available. Start with this list of the best things to do in downtown Atlanta with kids.
OUR 4 FAVORITE DOWNTOWN ATLANTA ATTRACTIONS
WORLD OF COCA-COLA
Beverage giant Coca-Cola is headquartered in Atlanta and hosts a museum dedicated to the history of the company. World of Coca-Cola offers both self-guided and VIP tours. Guests can view past and present advertising and products from different countries and have the opportunity to taste more than 100 flavors of beverages from around the world. You can also take photos with the famous Coca-Cola polar bear and visit the vault that holds the secret formula.
One of my favorite experiences in the museum is the 4-D theater, which offers guests a different type of experience. There is a 3-D movie; however, the theater is also equipped with special effects that coincide and coordinate with the film being shown. These special effects extend to your environment and include gently moving theater seats and environmental effects.
The Georgia Aquarium offers guests a variety of experiences that appeal to all ages. Visitors have the opportunity to see dolphins as they interact with trainers as well as the extensive marine life you expect at an aquarium.
Parents of younger children should check out Toddler Time, a special activity once a month that focuses on introducing younger children to marine animals. Toddler Time is a shorter experience, about 1 1/2 hours, that includes story time and a craft.
The Georgia Aquarium also offers a 4-D theater to captivate your imagination and transform your typical movies into unforgettable experiences.
CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF ATLANTA
The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is the perfect place for younger children to explore and play with purpose. Created specifically for children ages 0-8, the museum offers dozens of activities for children to experience without the typical worries of “Don’t touch that!” or “Is that dangerous?” that you may have in other museums.
Permanent exhibits include: exploring the geophysical world and space; interacting with food from the farm to a diner; playing in an indoor backyard and tree house; and engaging in the sciences of the body, light, and robots.
Each of the locations above is centrally located near Centennial Park, a 21-acre public green space dedicated to providing visitors a place to work and play downtown. An idea that stemmed from the celebration of the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, the space has been converted into a beautiful location perfect for hosting special events and providing a place for families to enjoy. Since you’ve spent your days visiting the indoor attractions, be sure to give the kids time to run and play outside in this park!
