Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital, is a stellar city for food. Not only is there reliable pub fare, cozy coffee shops, and a much-celebrated craft beer scene, there has also been a recent explosion of modern restaurants in Fredericton’s downtown core. Here’s where to go for an exciting evening of dinner and drinks in Freddy.

1. 11th Mile Restaurant and Cocktail Bar
Chef Peter Tompkins and Jennie Wilson burst onto the Fredericton culinary scene in 2017 with 11th Mile– a modern restaurant and cocktail bar with an ever-changing menu of interesting bar snacks, and small and large sharing plates. Prepare to be impressed by the ultra-cool atmosphere and big-city fare, such as scallion pancakes, beef carpaccio, braised brassica, or homemade pasta, all served with a large helping of Maritime hospitality.

2. MoCo Downtown
Comfort food and fine Italian dining is what you’ll find at MoCo Downtown, a family-run restaurant that opened in 2016. You’re guaranteed to leave satisfied, with a menu that features dips and appetizers perfect for sharing, followed by a range of homemade pasta and hearty main courses such as rack of lamb and chicken marsala, served in a relaxed atmosphere.

3. Lunar Rogue Pub
The Lunar Rogue is an institution in Fredericton, famous for its selection of more than 700 whiskies, each with its own tasting note (ask for the binder or download their app “The Rogue’s Whisky”). On the menu, enjoy pub fare like steak, wings, and nachos, as well as some great seafood such as clams, steamed mussels, or the Rogue’s own haddock fishcakes. For dessert, try the homemade sticky toffee pudding – washed down with an Irish whisky, of course!

4. 540 Kitchen and Bar
540, named for its Queen Street address, broke the mold in 2014 as the first gastro pub in the capital, and has kept standards high with ever-changing seasonal lunch and dinner menus with innovative pastas, curries, and burgers, made using fresh ingredients. Try local beer such as Picaroons, poured from a ten-tap draught beer system dedicated solely to local brews.

5. Gahan House Riverside
The first Gahan House brewery was in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and is now a popular chain of pubs throughout the Maritimes. The Gahan House Riverside, which opened in spring 2018, is on Queen Street, opposite the beautiful Fredericton courthouse. The Gahan offers a full pub menu, but seafood lovers will adore the appetizers: fish chowder, rock-crab dip, mussels, fishcakes, and an impressive selection of fresh, raw oysters.
