There’s a ton of burger and fry sayings that we Houstonians have: “When the going gets tough, the tough get burgers,” “When life gives you lemons, grab a bunch of french fries,” and “The grass is always greener with a milkshake in one hand and a cheeseburger in the other.” Maybe we’re joking, but maybe we’re not…you’ll just have to take our word for it and try our ‘Top 6’ burger and fry restaurants below.

Cliff’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers – 1822 Fountain View Dr.

*drools* Cliff’s. Y’all, Cliff’s is my secret place that I’m horrible at keeping a secret. Run by the same family for decades, they sling some of the best burger comfort food this side of the Galleria. The ‘Cheeseburger Combo’ is my go to with a 6 oz. beef patty covered in American cheese, nestled between a warm bun and covered in fresh pickles, lettuce, onion, tomatoes with the perfect amount of mayo and yellow mustard. If you find yourself jonesing for a burger while you’re in the Galleria, Cliff’s needs to be your stop!

Southwell’s Hamburger Grill – Tanglewood, Med Center, Heights/Washington, & Memorial

Southwell’s has multiple locations all over Houston, and they’ve been flipping burgers for nearly three decades. You know those epic backyard burgers that your dad, grandad, or uncle are famous for? Imagine if they opened a burger joint…that is Southwell’s. I know, you’re probably in the car already. Their old fashioned hamburgers are massive and juicy and come with accouterments like bacon, bleu cheese, chili, fried eggs, and more. You can even order a Big Red in some locations to drink…yes, Southwell’s is that Southern and legit.

Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack – 5230 Westpark Dr.

Famous for two things – their bison burgers and their location underneath Hwy 59 – Bubba’s promises a no frills experience and a dang good burger. Bison are known for their very lean and flavorful meat, and Bubba’s has harnessed that magic and wrestled it between two buns of glory. Like our other locations, Bubba’s has been family owned and operated for over 30 years and they aren’t showing signs of slowing down. Sure, you can have a beef burger, too, but try something new – who knows, you may have found your new favorite.

Pappas Burger – Galleria & Hobby Airport

Is there any food genre that the Pappas can’t conquer?! Nope, probably not, and that’s why we all happily shell out a few extra clams for their divine bovine. Ah, but friends, a Pappas burger isn’t merely any burger…unlike most of the burger joints on this list, Pappas kicks things up a notch: instead of just placing your order and picking up your burger, you place your order at the counter and then have a server the rest of your meal. Need a drink refill? More napkins? Want to place an order for the delectable looking chocolate shake that was just delivered to your neighbors? Your server is only too happy to help. With only two locations (Galleria or Hobby Airport), Pappas Burger is absolutely worth the potential pilgrimage.

Sam’s Burgers Fries Pies – 1017 Dairy Ashford

You guys, Sam’s buns, onion rings, and pies are LEGEN…wait for it…DARY! I’m a sucker for a good onion ring, and Sam’s has my heart. The perfect batter that comes out golden brown and crispy, almost like a tempura batter, is what I’m talking here and it pairs like heaven with their sweet bun burgers. Seared on the top with their signature ‘S,’ Sam’s isn’t here to play games. Certified Angus beef is what Sam’s is flipping along with spicy turkey burgers, yummy vegetarian patties, and even buffalo, so each member of the family has their preference covered.

Joy Love Burgers – 1801 North Mason Blvd

Alright, my West Houston homies, this one is for you. Joy Love over in Katy is serving up equal servings of joy and love as you bite into their burgers. Also a family operation, Joy Love knows that a good burger means quality ingredients.
