Located along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Cancun is one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations. While it may best be known for its miles of pristine white beaches and exciting nightlife, friends traveling together will find a whole lot more to do than soak up the sun and party all night. Here’s a number of Cancun activities to choose from.

Go Underwater to Experience MUSA, one of the World’s Most Unique Museums

MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte) is a unique museum that’s going viral, and is one of the most remarkable Cancun hidden gems. Snorkeling or diving down to this art museum beneath the waves with over 500 life-size sculptures submerged up to 20-feet-deep, is an experience you’ll be talking about for years to come. Each work is a satirical commentary on humanity, all built to aid in the understanding and protection of marine life.

If you choose to snorkel, as our group did, you’ll hop on a boat, cruise through a mangrove lagoon and leap into the water from a floating platform near Punta Nizuc reef. Beneath the surface is a variety of sculptures that can be marveled at depending on conditions, including the famous Understanding installation at just six feet under, and Reclamation. The latter was a favorite among our group, infusing hope while providing a sense of revival, with purple sea fans spreading from its frame.

Tequila Samples and a Tour

Mexico is where tequila was first produced, and one of the top Cancun activities involves sampling the country’s renowned spirit. Tequila Herradura Museo Sensorial, better known as the Tequila Museum, is located between the Kukulkan Mall and La Isla Shopping Village, providing an interesting tour and enlightening round of “sniff and slurp.” You’ll learn how drink was invented, how it’s made and all about the various types. The highlight of course, is the tasting, trying several different kinds of tequila in the sampling room, from blanco (white) to anejo (aged).

A Night of Authentic Cuisine and Entertainment at Xoximilco

Don’t spend all your nights at Coco Bongo or The City – Xochimilco offers an unforgettable night of authentic cuisine and entertainment. It starts with a ride on a gondola-like boat called a “trajinera,” while serenaded by mariachis. Afterwards, take a trip through Mexican history through traditional Mexican games, a delicious authentic meal, tequila, beer and fresh fruit drinks, all included in one admission price. Music, dance and song caps it all off.

Many people come to Mexico to enjoy the beautiful beaches, and Cancun is not an exception. Just minutes from La Isla Shopping Village, Playa Marlin offers a wide stretch of powder sugar-like sands, complete with lifeguards and beach gear like umbrellas and chairs available for rent. You can also discover another Cancun hidden gem by embarking on a day trip to Isla Contoy, which is home to another stunning beach.

Shopping and Attractions at La Isla Shopping Village

If you stay at Canopy by Hilton La Isla, not only can you enjoy its rooftop pool, but you’ll be a three-minute walk away from the open-air La Isla Shopping Village. It has a canal running through (gondola-style boat rides are available), while offering some of the best upscale shopping in the area, waterfront restaurants ideal for sunset watching, and one of the most popular Cancun activities: visiting the Interactive Aquarium.
