Whether you stand with the First Order or fight with the Resistance, Batuu is ready to welcome you to the Outer Rim of the known universe located at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Previously free from the volatile struggle between the Resistance and First Order, this forgotten land is filled with thriving forests and rising mountains. Once you’ve stepped foot into this once prosperous district, you’ll quickly realize you have entered a different realm all its own.

First things first! Upon arrival, download the Play Disney Parks app if you don’t have it already installed. Once logged in, navigate to Batuu and open the “Datapad.” This immersive game will let you experience an attraction like never before! “We have amazing technology that will enable Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to become a living land,” says Asa Kalama, Executive Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering. “As guests visit us at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, their mobile devices will be transformed into this amazing in-story tool. Using its four functions, you can interact with and unlock another level of storytelling right here at Black Spire Outpost.”

You’ll need to create a Datapad profile and pick your side. Pro tip: The First Order typically pays more credits than the Resistance. As Kalama mentioned, the four sections to navigate are Tools, Jobs, Map and Profile. It would take a whole other article to give further details into the complex Datapad but here are some important highlights as this game is a key feature for an out-of-this-world adventure.

  • Tools: This will allow you to hack various objects around Black Spire Outpost, translate the alien languages written everywhere (which is mostly Aurebesh), scan items to reveal what is inside and intercept transmissions, all to help your side win the final battle.
  • Jobs: This feature takes a little longer to complete but is probably the most essential. Jobs are listed as “Available,” “Advanced” and “Completed.” The jobs listed are from four factions: the Resistance, the First Order, the Scoundrels and a Black Spire Outpost neutral citizen.
  • Map: The map shows you where to use your tools and where to go for the next job.
  • Profile: This is where you can shop for equipment and outfits for your digital character by using the credits accrued from tasks and jobs.

Pro Tip: Know before you go… Only those 14 years and younger can wear costumes. Adults are allowed to wear clothing inspired by heroes and villains. Face masks and Jedi robes are prohibited.

A Long Time Ago…

You’ll begin your travels on Batuu walking through the outskirts of Black Spire Outpost where the Resistance has recently arrived and is hiding. The scenery is calm and serene amidst the ruins and forest before you enter the main marketplace. You’ll notice even the sounds are that of a different planet. A full-size X-wing and A-wing can be seen in this area. Perfect timing for photo opportunities!

Of course, you’ll want to make your way directly to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, as it’s the only ride open to date. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is set to debut December 5, 2019. Have your Datapad open and ready as you move throughout the experience for a chance to accrue some credits. Remember, these credits will allow you to purchase awesome gear and weapons for your digital character. Four to six passengers will board the craft to complete their mission from Hondo Ehnaka. Travelers have the choice of being a pilot, gunner or engineer for the duration of the mission. While waiting to start your mission, seize the opportunity to snap a few pictures next to the holo-chess table on board. Always remember, let the Wookie win though!

Pro Tip: When boarding Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, gunners can actually choose their mode of play between manual and automatic. Dare to test your speed and accuracy!

Your Next Mission

Now that your mission is complete and you may be suspected of assisting uprising, it’s time to make your way to Savi’s Workshop to hand-build your custom lightsaber allowing you to become one with the force. And if the force wills it, you could get the rare black Kyber crystal. Located next door to Savi’s Workshop is the Droid Depot. Here you can build your own droid to be your trusted helper.

All of the missions and fight preparations are sure to stir up an appetite. Duck into Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo to refuel for what lies ahead. Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs is sure to satisfy any cosmic craving. Foodies can delight in signature cuisine, such as: Smoked Kaadu Ribs (sticky pork ribs), Felucian Garden Spread (a plant-based meatloaf entrée) and Braised Shaak Roast (beef pot roast). “Bright suns” to the early risers who can jump start the interstellar day with breakfast options. Should you need something a little faster for a quick getaway, stop by Ronto Roasters for a Ronto Wrap made of spit roasted pork and sausage.

Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities is the land’s main retail store and situated just across the pathway from Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. Here you can gather unique memorabilia and artifacts from across the galaxy during this galactic adventure. It is here that true Star Wars fans can catch a glimpse of items like artwork for Darth Vader, Imperial Guard helmets, Tauntaun and Nexu heads and chain mail with the Mandalorians symbol against them. Allow your eyes to devour the intricate wood carvings of famous battle scenes displayed when you initially walk into the mart. As you approach Dok busily working in his barricade, remember, he will always look out for himself. Tread carefully!

During your tour in Batuu’s marketplace, pick up Outpost Mix from Kat Saka’s Kettle. These tasty morsels are a specialized sweet and salty popcorn snack packing fruity notes mixed with red chili. You can’t miss the brightly hued treat displayed to lure all its way. While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to purchase the exclusively themed Coca-Cola beverages in round grenade style bottles decorated with the iconic Aurebesh language. Around the back of Kat Saka’s Kettle stand is Bina’s Creature Stall for those in the market for a new pet. Bina travels all over the galaxy collecting creatures and brings them to Batuu to sell to interested travelers.

Pro Tip: The exclusively themed Coca-Cola thermal denotator beverages are allowed on flights per TSA for those who wish to return home with one or take one as a gift. They will need to be stowed away within checked luggage as they are treated as “oversized liquid.”

Witness the Power of the Dark Side

End your time on the Outer Rim at Docking Bay 9 which is the Base of Operations for the First Order led by none other than Kylo Ren. You’ll even get a peak of his TIE echelon that is parked in the area. Savor blue or green (dairy-free) milk from the Milk Stand. Pssst… This milkshake can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic! The First Order Gift Shop has gear and apparel for First Order supporters and recruits. The Kylo Ren mini show and 709th Stormtrooper Legion can be spotted here as well. These mini shows are not on a schedule and can pop up at a moment’s notice! Typically only a few minutes in length, it includes Kylo Ren exiting his ship, searching for Rey or even a physical battle.

Stormtroopers, Rey, Chewbacca, Kylo Ren and other characters roam throughout Batuu continuously. Don’t be surprised to see members of the Resistance detained or even running from Stormtroopers through the land. The characters will stop to take pictures with you if you ask but, of course, don’t expect them to break character. If you have a chance, do take time to interact with a Stormtrooper. They are humorously sarcastic and will surely ignite a chuckle with their improvisation. Most importantly, don’t miss the opportunity to have a conversation with the local villagers. These Batuuans all have their own story to tell and even house useful information. Ask questions like, “Why is there a single spire erected in the middle of the outpost? Is it special?” This experience will be unlike any other for those who dare to travel there.

Pro Tip: Batuuan Spira is available to use for purchasing goods while on Batuu. This metal coin is native currency that is used like a gift card. A minimum of $100 is required to be loaded to the Spira.

At the edge of the galaxy

So far away

Black was the spire

That called me to stay.

A beacon for drifters

Forgotten and lost

The spires summoned those

Broken and tossed.

Come stay here forever

Or just pass on through.

The spirit of Black Spire

Will forever change you.
