Phoenix Sky Harbor was recently named the best large airport of 2019 by the Wall Street Journal for multiple reasons (great WiFi speed and on-time arrivals among some), but its variety of great food options is definitely one of them. Not only does Sky Harbor have a variety of options, from grab-and-go to upscale lounges, outlets range from national faves (hello Shake Shack) to tons of popular local picks. Here, we highlight the local favorites making this “America’s Tastiest Airport”.
If you’re traveling through this terminal, you’re in luck; the choices are endless here. Before passing through security, fill up on comforting southwestern eats at Chelsea’s Kitchen, savory favorites at Gilbert-founded Joe’s Real BBQ or enjoy some decadent sweet and savory picks at LoLo’s Chicken & Waffles.
Post-security, there’s even more options. Fox Restaurants, a popular local restaurant group that’s now expanding nationally, has three of their concepts here including the modern Mexican eats of Blanco Tacos & Tequila, who’s white queso nachos will make any layover seem doable; the trendy Olive & Ivy, featuring salads and sandwiches with a Mediterranean flair (the Meditteranean Chopped Salad is a fave); and Zinburger, home of some of the juiciest burgers in town (not to mention amazing truffle fries).
Four Peaks (you may know their popular Kilt Lifter) and O.H.S.O., popular local breweries both serving upscale bar eats, both have locations here for kicking back. Or for a Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives-approved way to start your day, there’s no better choice than Matt’s Big Breakfast. Other great picks include Pita Jungle, whose pitas and hummus have made them a Valley staple; La Grande Orange, local grocer churning out great pizzas and cafe faves; authentic Mexican outlet Barrio Cafe; and casual Humble Pie.
Pro tip: Once you get past security in Terminal 4, travelers can access any of the gates, meaning all dining options are accessible.
While smaller, recently renovated Terminal 3 still offers some great local choices. Post-security travelers will find SanTan Brewing, one of the most popular breweries in town with just-as-great food like burgers, nachos and pizza. The Tavern, founded by Phoenix chef and TV personality Mark Tarbell, is a great dinner spot with choices like steaks and noodle bowls. For classic pies favored by USA Today, Food Network and more, stop at The Parlor. And while not local, ultra-popular burger chain Shake Shack is worth mentioning.
Smaller in size, Terminal 2 still offers some gems. Most notably, a second O.H.S.O. location which has something for everyone including burgers, salads and sandwiches, plus an array of local beers. Other great choices nearby include NYPD, serving up downright great slices of pizza and Barrio Avion, with classic Mexican faves.
Need a caffeine boost? There’s a handful of chain coffee joints like Starbucks, Dunkin’ and Peets in the airport but for something more local make a visit to Cartel. Located post-security at gate C13 in Terminal 4, this Valley staple will give you a much-needed morning jolt. Try out their on-tap cold brew. Another great choice, The Refuge is found at gate B9 in Terminal 4 and is always serving up seasonal flavors and grab-and-go breakfast items.
