Just southeast of downtown Vancouver, Burnaby features British Columbia’s biggest shopping mall, beautiful parks, and bountiful cultural offerings. If you have a thing for the outdoors, hike amid huge Douglas fir trees in Central Park, or view herons and bald eagle in Burnaby Lake Regional Nature Park. In the summer at Deer Lake Park, you can rent a boat or attend events like Symphony in the Park in July or the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival in August. Deer Lake Park is also home to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, which presents live theater and concert performances.
The three-story Metropolis at Metrotown shopping mall boasts some 400 shops and services, plus a multiplex movie theater. Shoppers also flock to the bustling malls at Brentwood Town Centre and Lougheed Town Centre, easily accessible by car or the SkyTrain transit system. To explore Burnaby’s early history, check out the Burnaby Village Museum with a restored farmhouse, carousel, and actors in 1920s costumes. And modern architecture buffs shouldn’t miss the Arthur Erickson-designed Simon
Fraser University, which overlooks Metro Vancouver from atop Burnaby Mountain.
