Renowned for its legendary waves, the North Shore of Oahu is a surfing mecca. The seven miles of epic beaches are complemented by an easy going lifestyle and lush greenery. Winter is surf season in Hawaii, producing towering waves of over 30 feet. Most of the action happens from November through February with major surf competitions, including Vans Triple Crown. Smaller and gentler waves during the summer create a calmer setting for swimming and surfing.
Roughly a one-hour drive from Waikiki, the quaint town of Haleiwa is a must-stop before heading to the beach. Check out the colorful storefronts, art galleries and casual eateries. As you head further north towards Kahuku and Laie, find food trucks and fruit stands along the way. The garlic shrimp and Hawaiian shave ice are crowd favorites.
