The Sponge Capital of the World

Tarpon Springs was settled by Greek sponge divers, and is still known as the Sponge Capital of the World. That legacy can still be seen in the Greek restaurants lining Dodecanese Blvd. along the waterfront at the northern tip of Tampa Bay. Browse the antique stores, art galleries, and specialty shops along the brick streets of the historic district, or go deep-sea fishing. You can browse the sponge museum, place a bet at Tampa Bay Downs, find a treasure at the Oldsmar Flea Market. You can also decamp to Honeymoon Island for pristine beaches, nature trails, birdwatching, and more.
