There comes a time during the winter season when I start fantasizing about tropical lands where the air blows warm and humid on my skin while my toes sift through the sun-baked sand. That’s when I know it’s time to plan our next beach vacation. There are so many places to get a Caribbean fix, but how do you choose where to go?

For our last trip, we wanted a destination with beautiful views that would allow us to relax, but also had plenty of activities for the kids. We recently visited the Bahamian island of Bimini, which met all of our requirements. Here are five reasons to consider Bimini for your next Caribbean vacation.

If you’ve been to the Caribbean before, chances are good you have already been to Nassau, the Bahamian capital on New Providence, and a major port for cruise ships. Bimini is a mere one-tenth the size of New Providence and happens to be the closest port of the island nation to mainland U.S. (just 53 miles from Miami, FL). Until recently, the only way for visitors to reach Bimini was via chartered boat. You could be the first among your friends to travel there!

With direct service at least four days per week from Miami to Bimini, FRS Caribbean makes reaching the islands extremely easy and turnkey. After booking your stay at Hilton at Resorts World Bimini online, you will find links to FRS Caribbean’s reservation page to book your transportation to the island. The ferry can be economical for Hilton guests, but as always, do your research and compare your options. There are also two airlines that offer flights for your trip to Bimini.

Being on a smaller island with one main dock means fewer tourists vying for pool lounges and table service. The FRS Caribbean is the only large ship that docks on Bimini, which limits the number of island visitors and maintains the relaxing, laid back vacation vibe we were seeking.

Venturing out with the kids (especially little ones) in tow in a different country can be a little daunting to parents. Hilton Bimini offers everything a family needs to have a fun, relaxing vacation within the Resorts World property. There was enough variety of restaurants and activities that we never felt limited. We walked almost everywhere, and when we didn’t want to walk, the hotel tram was available to transport us.

Although lounging by the pool may be the only thing on your to-do list, there are plenty of activities on Bimini. And if you’re traveling to Bimini with kids, you’ll likely want to have choices. Besides the hotel pool, there are two other pools within a short walking distance, as well as a beach with different kinds of beach toys available for rent. Our daughters loved paddling each other up and down the ocean on the stand-up paddle board.

In addition, there is a water playground near the Marketplace with floating inflatables, water bikes and a sandy beach that caters to kids of all ages. At the Marketplace, there’s a kid’s club that offers ping pong, Wii, Xbox, PS4 and movies. Adults might enjoy gambling at the casino which is packed with a variety of slot machines and gaming tables.

Once we returned from Bimini, I had already started planning our return trip. There were several excursions we didn’t have time to do, and I’m really excited to experience the hotel — specifically the new lazy river, spa and lounge — in its finished glory. Our next trip to Bimini can’t come soon enough!
