A visit to Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia is a thrilling experience that no one should miss. Billed as one of the most photographed attractions in Canada, the iconic red-and-white lighthouse sits upon massive granite boulders that sparkle in the sunshine, impervious to the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Leaping across the rocks at Peggy’s Cove can work up a serious hunger. Luckily, there are several places to eat at Nova Scotia’s most popular tourist attraction – with a few menu items that might surprise you. Here are some of the highlights.

1. Fisherman’s Breakfast
Breakfast at Peggy’s Cove is a great way to start the day. The Sou’wester restaurant is open year-round so you can greet the sunrise with eggs and bacon or the Fisherman’s Breakfast: homemade baked beans and salt fish hash, served with green tomato chow (chutney) and a homemade roll.

2. Steamed Gingerbread
Don’t leave the Sou’wester without trying their famous steamed gingerbread served with homemade whipped cream, soft-serve ice cream, or lemon sauce. Most visitors are surprised when they order this dessert, because the gingerbread is a warm, soft piece of cake, rather than a hard cookie.

3. Boil Your Own Lobster
“Become a Lobster Chef in 12 Minutes” is the slogan for Peter Richardson’s U-Cook Lobster, which burst on to the Peggy’s Cove culinary scene in 2017 with a food truck where visitors can boil their own lobster, and devour it, alfresco, leaning over an oil drum or a standing table. Open seasonally from May to October, the experience is a huge hit with people from all over the world.

4. Lobster Roll
Lobster rolls are soft-buttered and grilled hot dog buns stuffed with fresh lobster meat, and the best place to get these beauties is also at U-Cook Lobster. Part of the attraction is to meet Richardson himself, who leaps around the truck, wearing rain boots and a fisherman’s sweater, chatting to customers and encouraging photographs.

5. Lobster Congee
People are often surprised and delighted to see Lobster Congee on the menu at U-Cook Lobster. It took a while to get the recipe right (rice boiled in a slightly spicy lobster stock, garnished with fresh lobster, ginger, and spring onion), but Richardson says that since he thickened the broth in mid-summer 2018, the congee has been selling nonstop.

6. Gourmet Ice Cream
Halifax’s hot weather sweetheart is Dee Dee’s Ice Cream – an award-winning downtown ice-cream and snack bar that, in the summertime, opens in its original location atPeggy’s Cove. What’s unexpected about ice-cream? At Dee Dee’s, it’s the incredible flavor combinations such as Mexican chocolate or banana cardamom.

7. Homemade Chowder
Five minutes away from the lighthouse, Rhubarb was named best restaurant on the South Shore 2018 by the Wine Association of Nova Scotia. Year-round specialties at Rhubarb include homemade chowder, fishcakes, and sumptuous caramel desserts.
