Here at Baltimore Center Stage, we have put the utmost thought and consideration behind our upcoming 2018-2019 theatrical season. Drawing from the 1950s South to contemporary San Francisco, from the Yiddish theater of the 1920s to right here and now in Baltimore, we have found six Mainstage plays that we think will speak the most to our loyal patrons and to new guests.

We open our season in September 2018 with a literary classic in our 540-seat Pearlstone Theater: the Tennessee Williams drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, about a Southern family teetering on the edge of collapse, undone by their deception and resentment.

Our second play, presented in our more intimate Head Theater, is King of the Yees. Lauren Yee’s affectionate comedy is about her father, her Chinese-American family, and the rich traditions that bond generations. This play is a must for anyone with first-generation ties—or a sense of humor. Broadway World called it “delightfully meta and eventually metaphysical” and the Seattle Times wrote that Yee “displays a distinctive, keen-edged wit, a quirky and capacious imagination, and a fresh, millennial vision of Asian America.”

Just in time for the holiday season—and set right here in Baltimore—A Wonder in My Soul is a boisterous comedy about two life-long friends who own a hair salon in a changing neighborhood. From the brilliant mind of playwright Marcus Gardley (dance of the holy ghosts) this play tackles tough issues like gentrification, enveloped in a loving and lovely tale of friendship and family.

Next, we usher in 2019 with the Tony Award-winning smash hit Fun Home, the musical adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s coming of age graphic novel. Alison Bechdel (of the famous Bechdel test) tells the absurd, unbelievable, and very real story of her family. And life growing up in the Bechdel Funeral Home just got even more interesting now that the amazing Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change) and Lisa Kron (2.5 Minute Ride) have set this story to music.

We are proud to bring Paula Vogel’s Indecent to Baltimore, the bold and true story behind Sholem Asch’s landmark controversial Yiddish drama God of Vengeance. This latest hit from the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of A Civil War Christmas, The Baltimore Waltz, and How I Learned to Drive, pays homage to artists who are ahead of their time and doomed to pay the price.

We conclude the season with the world premiere production of Christine Anderson’s How to Catch Creation. This is an incredibly lyrical and beautiful story about love, second chances, and fatherhood. In the mid-1960s, a young writer’s life turns upside down when her girlfriend drops some unexpected news. Even 50 years later, the reverberations of that moment still echo. This is a bittersweet story of finding and following our passions.
