Picture yourself lying on the beach somewhere – anywhere you wish, really – with the beating sun warming your skin, the sand between your bare toes, and the salty island breeze flowing through the strands of your hair. There’s not a cloud in the sky, but there’s certainly a tropical drink in your hand.
If the cocktail you imagined was a famous Piña Colada or Aruba Ariba, you’ve just uncovered a new means for celebration! This July, honor the anniversary of the creation of both of these iconic beverages with Hilton. Besides their birthday month and irresistibly fruity and refreshing flavors, these two cocktails have yet one more thing in common – they were both created at Hilton Caribbean hotels!
The Piña Colada dates back to 1954 at El Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The mixologist behind the magic, Ramon “Monchito” Marrero, was asked to create a cocktail that embodied the flavors of the island of Puerto Rico. After three months of experimentation, he found success in a Piña Colada. Comprised of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and white rum blended with ice, this cocktail found eternal fame after being featured in numerous songs such as “Escape,” aka “The Pina Colada Song” by Rupert Holmes. If this isn’t evidence enough of the impact the Pina Colada has had on society, it even became the national drink of Puerto Rico in 1978.
A boat ride across the Caribbean brings us to Aruba, celebrating the birthday of a crave-worthy drink of their own this July as well – the Aruba Ariba. In 1963, bartender Juan “Jonky” Tromp of The Hilton Aruba hotel combined vodka, white rum, Grand Marnier, creme de banana, orange juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and grenadine, creating something magical. Aiming for a “tall, tropical cocktail” that represented Aruba, he had instead concocted what would come to be one of the most popular tropical beverages of its time. When Tromp was presenting his creation to hotel managers, he raised a glass to yell “Aruba Ariba,” which later was coined as the cocktail’s name.
The legacy that both of these drinks have established will likely last forever, unlike the tan lines developed while drinking them. As soon as a bathing suit slips on, adults find themselves instantly craving the sweet, refreshing flavors of these summertime beverages. Not to mention, just a sip of either will have you day-dreaming about a tropical Caribbean getaway. Celebrate Aruba Ariba Day July 1st, and Piña Colada Day on July 10th and honor two of the most iconic cocktails that summertime would be incomplete without. Consider paying a visit to the hotels these drinks were first concocted for special treats!
