One of my favorite things about being a dog owner: bringing my fluffy little bestie out in public. It’s a great way to train her to be gentle and calm around new people, plus I just like spending time with her outside the house. Whether it’s dinner, drinks or walks downtown, I’m perpetually asking friends if they mind me bringing the puppy along. However, the toughest part is knowing which places are actually dog-friendly, and which just have patios out back. Luckily, Austin is a supremely dog-friendly city, so it was pretty easy to do a small round-up of dog-friendly patios around town:

Chispas: Chef Jason Dady’s restaurant for tacos and margs in the middle of downtown has a bright interior and inviting vibes throughout. They welcome dogs on the outdoor patio, which is decorated with string lights, a couple fun wall murals, and plenty of seating. Definitely recommend trying the House Chispa, Frozen Paloma, Made-to-Order Guac and happy hour specials from 3 pm to 6 pm every Monday to Friday.

Austin Beer Garden + Brewery : If you kind of want to go out near downtown but don’t really want to fight the downtown crowds, Austin Beer Garden is your spot! It’s a super casual hangout, and I’ve heard the food is scrumptious. Be sure to leave your pup outside (everyone just ties their leash to the front railing), order inside at the bar, and then stake out a spot on the picnic benches out front. We let the dog wander leash-distance from the table while we tried the namesake lager and IPA, and none of us were disappointed.

Lazarus Brewing Company: Fun little brewery with a decent-sized patio. We each enjoyed a yummy pint, although honestly I wished we’d have gotten a flight. I definitely would recommend trying one or two little bites as well because 1) it’s always better to snack while drinking and 2) the fried chickpeas were pretty delicious.

Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden: Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden is way bigger than I originally thought! After running into some San Antonio friends, we ordered some CBD-infused coffee, which was a first-time endeavor for me. Depending on when you go, Cosmic Coffee rotates through various Texas-based roasters like Merit, Flat Track and others—and as coffee people, we’re all about it. Of course, we couldn’t leave without sharing a pint of Austin-based beer (also rotating draft selections). And can we talk about the food trucks? So many options! Between the shaded picnic tables, endless supply of water bowls and plethora of other dogs present, both owners and puppy had a splendid time.

Infinite Monkey Theorem: Vibrant wall murals, perfectly kitschy furniture and so many wines on tap! With a warehouse-type feel, Infinite Monkey Theorem let us wander with our pup and we could sit inside or outside, which I totally appreciate because sometimes it’s nice to get out of the sun. The staff was more-than-friendly and even came around the bar to give the dog a treat! Basically, everyone had a great time.
