Del Mar is known for horseracing “where the turf meets the surf,” but there’s so much more to do besides play the ponies. Check out these 10 hotspots to eat, drink, shop and play in this beachside paradise.

After an obligatory stop to watch a race and show off your hat at the Del Mar Racetrack, stop into Viewpoint Brewing Co. across the street and try a pint of one of 20 craft beers. Or head over to Del Mar Village, filled with galleries featuring the work of local artists, charming shops and boutiques and, on Saturdays, the fresh finds at the farmers market. Little ones will love a picnic at either of Del Mar’s coastal parks, Powerhouse and Seagrove parks, and if you’ve brought Fido along don’t miss North Beach, aka Dog Beach. All that exploring got you hungry? Pop into Prepkitchen for charcuterie and a blueberry lavender mimosa, or head to Café Secret and try the Peruvian cuisine. It’s all the rage in San Diego. At Beesalt Balcony, named for a Grecian legend about bees that make salt instead of honey, Mediterranean classics like pitas and gyro are served up seaside. And no visit to Del Mar would be complete without a big slice of Hula Pie from Jake’s Del Mar.
