As a city focused on fun for the whole brood, San Antonio is bursting with family-friendly things to do. Check out our guide below to help you plan a memorable family trip to San Antonio – and let the adventures begin.
The DoSeum isn’t your usual museum – you won’t have to tell your kids to stand still, be quiet, and don’t touch. On the contrary, it’s all hands-on and interactive experiences at the city’s only kid-focused museum. Get sneaky and build math skills at the Spy Academy, let the kids be the grown-ups at Tiny Town, or engage in interactive story-making at Imagine It. Don’t miss the enormous outdoor play area, one of the largest spaces of its kind in the whole country.
Natural Bridge Caverns
Head deep down underground for a unique adventure at the Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest cave system in Texas located only 25 minutes from San Antonio. Choose from several guided tours that explore the magical and eerie limestone rock formations and waterways hidden within. Back up at ground level, the fun continues – try your hand at mining, pan for gems and fossils, challenge the whole family to a 5,000-square-foot outdoor maze or go ziplining over the lush Hill Country treetops. For a real thrill, take the kids on a safari at the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch next door to get acquainted with giraffes, zebras, ostriches, and many other exotic animals.
Be prepared – your kids will never want to leave SeaWorld. They can swim with dolphins or beluga whales, hang out with penguins in the snow, or get up close to sharks and stingrays. Don’t forget to get splashed on the Wave Breaker ride or at a high-energy orca show.
Located in the tiny Hill Country town of Johnson City, less than an hour from San Antonio, the Science Mill is big on adventures featuring cutting-edge technology. This unique discovery center is bursting with more than 50 interactive exhibits, including the popular Fossil Dig, Robotic Arm, and the Wave Pendulum, with an Aquaponics Greenhouse to open in 2019.
San Antonio Zoo
Furry, funny animal friends are waiting to greet your kids at the San Antonio Zoo. The zoo includes a rainforest section, butterfly exhibit, and petting farm, but you can also arrange to feed hippos or giraffes. When the kids get tired, hop aboard the zoo train for a ride through spacious Brackenridge Park nearby.
The Magik Theatre
If the family needs some downtime, catch a matinee show at the Magik Theatre, where everyone can sit back, relax, and be transported to the faraway land of storytime through the performers’ fantastic costumes, eye-catching props, and witty songs.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas
Known for thrilling rides, an enormous water park, crowd-pleasing musical performances, and indulgent carnival snacks, Six Flags is always a good time for kids of all ages. If possible, visit on a weekday to avoid crowds and long lines.
The raw energy, the roar of the crowd – a Spurs game is where you’ll feel the real spirit of San Antonio come alive. From the crazy antics of the Spurs wild-eyed coyote mascot to the spontaneous prize giveaways and competitions and yummy snacks like chocolate-covered fruit kebabs or mac and cheese, your kids will have an unforgettable experience.
Tower of the Americas
At the top of this 750-feet relic from the 1968 World Fair, you’ll be wowed by the best view in town, but you can also enjoy a 4D movie theater experience inside the Tower of the Americas. Later, head down to the surrounding HemisFair Park, where the kids can splash around in the water gardens and explore the playground, while you relax on tree-shaded benches.
The Amazing Mirror Maze
After visiting the Alamo (audio tour recommended), take your kids across the street for a thrilling experience at the 4D Amazing Mirror Maze, the largest mirror maze in the whole state.
