On a recent trip, we were pleasantly surprised to learn how family-friendly South Beach Miami is. Of course, there’s always the beach or the hotel pool (the pool at Hilton Bentley Miami is quite refreshing), but what is there to do when the kids tire of those? If your kids are a bit too old for the playground, you may be wondering what might appeal to older kids. Here are our suggestions of things to do in South Beach with tweens or teens.

South Beach is very walkable! And even if it’s really hot, there are plenty of cafés, ice cream or frozen yogurt shops to stop into when you need hydration (or just the breeze of A/C). The architecture in South Beach is something to behold. You can do as we did and just admire what we saw without a map, or you can take the Miami Design Preservation League’s official Art Deco District Walking Tour. All tours begin at 10:30 am daily and cost $25. (There are discounts for seniors and students.)

This can be a great option if your family wants to see a lot of South Beach, but without the hassle of constantly seeking out parking or a taxi. There are several outfitters who offer bike rentals and Segway tours on South Beach.

Bike and Roll Miami has two locations in South Beach. Kids under age 12 are not permitted on the Segways, and our kids cannot wait to be old enough to try them! They also offer all different types of bikes for rental, including bicycles built for two (!), from one hour to all-day.

Another bike rental option on South Beach is Citi Bikes, which is a bike-sharing program for locals and visitors. Visitors can rent bikes from 30 minutes to all-day, with rental costs ranging from $4 to $24. There are Citi Bike stations all over South Beach, so it’s a very easy system for a wandering tourist to use.

Call me a wimp if you must, but I am not a huge fan of jet skiing. Although that fact didn’t stop me from trying it during our trip. It was only my second time driving one myself, and one of my kids was riding with me. Talk about stressful! Why am I still suggesting it as a fun family outing, you ask? Because the rest of the family had a blast!

There are three things that I would recommend if you decide to rent jet skis in Miami Beach. First, unless you are an expert jet-skier, book a guided tour! The guide will not only point out landmarks, but he’ll be there to help out if you lose power in the middle of a shipping lane. (Yes, that happened!) Second, be honest with the guide and yourself about your level of experience and adventure. Third, the water will be smoothest in the morning. If you want to lessen a bumpy ride, book a tour in the morning. We used the Miami Jet Ski Rental outfit, which is just a short drive across the bridge from Hilton Bentley.

There are two Hilton resorts in South Beach Miami: Hilton Bentley Miami and Hilton Grand Vacations at McAlpin-Oceans Plaza. We stayed at Hilton Bentley Miami and appreciated its proximity to all of these fun things to do in South Beach Florida with kids!
