Holiday lights capture the imaginations and wonder of children young and old. Enjoying the bright twinkle and vivid colors make a perfect family outing. For families that want to combine a love of holiday light and travel, San Antonio offers the ideal setting to be wowed.
The ultimate way to experience the San Antonio Christmas lights with kids is to explore the San Antonio River Walk or Paseo del Rio, from the downtown towards the museums and historic Pearl Brewery.
For context, the San Antonio River Walk is divided into sections. The original section is located downtown, connecting the Alamo, convention center, restaurants and King William neighborhood. The Mission Reach section then extends the trail eight miles south. The Museum Reach section connects the River Walk to downtown San Antonio, adding 1.3 miles of trail to the historic Pearl Brewery with a variety of art installations along the way.
FOUR WAYS TO ENJOY SAN ANTONIO CHRISTMAS LIGHTS ON THE RIVER WALK:
EXPERIENCE THE RIVER WALK HOLIDAY LIGHTS
Along the Downtown River Walk (from the Convention Center to the Museum Reach), almost 200 trees are decorated with twinkling lights and bridges.
STROLL ALONG DURING THE FORD FIESTA DE LAS LUMINARIAS
Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in December, more than 6,000 luminaries line the banks of the downtown San Antonio River. The glowing candles in sand-filled bags line the walk to symbolize the “lighting of the way.” If you are lucky, you will see and hear the holiday boat caroling as school, church and community groups sing traditional carols on cruising boats.
ENJOY THE MUSEUM REACH CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
The San Antonio River Authority’s Museum Reach River of Lights is illuminated with colorful floodlights in the water, lit trees along the banks of the river and even a bright evergreen at the Lock and Dam complex at Brooklyn Avenue.
TAKE A RIDE ALONG THE RIVER
Children will love floating down the river in the evening, as they look up at the San Antonio Christmas lights. Although a 40-minute guided cruise along a 2 1/2 mile stretch will narrate the history of the area, families can also cruise on a river taxi boat. The taxi boat drivers are happy to share information about the area, and the 24-hour ticket allows you to hop on and off as much as you would like for $15 per person. In fact, when you take the taxi towards the Pearl Brewery, children will also enjoying traveling through the lock that connects the two sections.
If you are lucky enough to have a River Walk view from Hilton Palacio del Rio, you will be able to view the many lights from your own balcony late into the night while the kids fall asleep.
