Puerto Rico is one of those places in the Caribbean that is just too good to be true. Given it’s close proximity to Florida, and the fact that you don’t even need a passport to visit (Puerto Rico is a US commonwealth!) simply make it a conveniently amazing island to spend a vacation especially when you want to take your kids with you! Puerto Rico has lots of fun activities that the whole family can enjoy. However, planning a vacation with your whole family can get a bit overwhelming. Not to worry! We have gathered here a few of the things you can do when you’re visiting Puerto Rico with kids.
Castillo San Felipe del Morro
A classic location and important landmark in the history of Puerto Rico, el Castillo San Felipe del Morro is one of the top attractions for kids and adults alike. This castle was built in the 16th century by the Spaniards, and was used to protect San Juan from intruders. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site for many reasons, one of them being its rich historical value. Your kids will be amazed when they see the cannons, walls, barracks, turrets and general structure of the site. The amount of fun pictures you can get here are limitless, plus the kids will be happy to get their own Pirates of the Caribbean style adventure.
When on vacation, night time does not necessarily mean bedtime. There’s plenty of activities for kids to do at night as well. One of them being kayaking in bioluminescent waters. This fantasy-like activity will leave your kids in awe. Kayaking at night in places like Mosquito Bay or Laguna Grande is a beautiful experience: you get to see how the water lights up as a result of glow-in-the-dark plankton. Plankton emit an electric blue hue when disturbed. Once you’re there you’ll understand why it seems like magic. Although it is a safe activity, this one is recommended for kids 6 years old and above.
Horseback Riding at El Yunque National Park
Do you want to visit the ONLY tropical rainforest of the United States National Forest System? Then you must go to El Yunque. It is around 45 minutes away from San Juan but it is absolutely worth the visit. After hurricanes Irma and Maria, a large portion of the park had to close, yet a few sites and trails stayed open to the public. You can take a guided tour on horseback and see with your own eyes the beauty in this natural landmark. There are mountains, waterfalls, lagoons, and simply the most beautiful flora and fauna to appreciate. Of course, getting to experience the rainforest is enhanced when you’re riding on horses, especially when the whole family is present. Be ready to take the most beautiful pictures for your social media accounts, El Yunque does not disappoint!
Museo del Niño
Family vacations are obviously relaxing and entertaining, but it is always a plus if they can have the educational component. You get to have those three characteristics when you visit the Museo del Niño, or children’s museum. The museum is in Carolina, which is only about 20 minutes away from San Juan. It is three stories high and has lots of hands-on exhibits, as well as a petting zoo, a rock climbing wall, a playground and even go-kart racing. The kids will have fun while also getting involved in educational exhibits. You can always leave this one for the day you want to take a break from the pool and the beach, or if you’re stuck with a rainy day.
Located on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, Ponce is great to visit with kids. It is a pretty colonial port city and has beautiful churches, parks and museums. Fun fact: here in Ponce is the first firehouse to be built in the Caribbean, meaning it has antique fire trucks and pumps – something that kids will enjoy seeing. Besides the beautiful town itself, Ponce is home to Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort. This resort has a family package available, a big playground, a mini golf, and a playpen. There are two pools, a whirlpool and a water slide. In other words, kids here have endless recreation options. Plus, there is a 27-hole golf course, clubhouse and casino in case you want to have fun while the kids are enjoying their activities as well.
Without a doubt, Puerto Rico welcomes families and offers a number of fun activities that appeal to both kids and parents.
