Combining a bucolic farming atmosphere with spectacular outdoor recreation opportunities, Chilliwack is a scenic community in the Fraser Valley. Located approximately an hour and a half east of Vancouver by car, it’s home to hundreds of farms, making it the perfect place to buy organic honey, chicken, corn, and other products.
Chilliwack means “valley of many streams” in a local native language – and it’s an apt description of the region. Nature aficionados can head to the Great Blue Heron Reserve to hike and view birds from the observation tower. These wetlands along the Vedder River offer great views of the Cascade Mountains, while the towering Bridal Veil Falls also delivers a lovely hike through nature.

In the summer, another way to make a splash is at Cultus Lake. Camp, rent a jet-ski, fish for rainbow trout, or enjoy more than 25 different slides and other attractions at Cultus Lake Waterpark, British Columbia’s biggest waterpark. The Chilliwack Heritage Park, launched in 2001, hosts everything from dog shows to a Christmas craft market. Downtown Chilliwack also boasts a pleasantly surprising top-notch selection of used bookstores, boutiques, and restaurants serving Japanese, Indian, and West Coast cuisine.
