Y’all, heaven is back in town and it has a name: Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW)! This month long dining extravaganza (from August 1 – September 3) features specially priced brunches, lunches, and dinners at restaurants from The Woodlands to Galveston. Break out your comfy pants, ladies and gents, and book your favorite Houston Hilton property ASAP.
HRW is a bonafide tradition for any foodie down here, and the way it works is simple:
- Select your restaurant from the tantalizing list of participants
- Peruse each restaurant’s HRW menu that strikes your fancy
* Note: Some restaurants participate with specials for Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner, while others are only running special menus for one or two meals
- Show up and chow down
Pricing runs between $20 and $45 per person, which is an absolute steal considering we’re talking multiple courses at some of the most exclusive and delectable restaurants in the city. A portion of each meal’s price benefits America’s largest food bank, the Houston Food Bank, so you can fill your tummy and someone else’s at the same time! Should you make a reservation before you dine? You don’t have to, but this Houstonian absolutely does.
So, what’s my list of the restaurants that you absolutely can’t miss? I’m so glad you asked:
*sigh* Oh, rise, the Parisian soufflé restaurant of my dreams. If you’re looking for three courses of HRW perfection, run (don’t walk) to rise n°2. Begin your meal with their French Onion Soup (my favorite in all of Houston) or the insanely yummy Marshmallow Soup (no sugary marshmallows, just mini soufflé’s of goat cheese swimming in a carrot and tomato bisque), then cruise into the Jambon and Gruyere entrée soufflé , and – for your grand finale – float away in a Bananas Foster soufflé.
That swanky hotel that all your friends keep Instagramming where the rooms are straight out a movie and the food looks impeccable? Yeah, that’s The Sam Houston, Houston’s very first hotel! Nestled comfortably inside the hotel sits The Pearl, one of our best kept restaurant secrets. The Pearl selected their top dishes to grace the HRW menu and you’re going to want them all, trust me. Dive into the Smokey Tomato Soup or the Gulf Fried Oysters as your appetizer, nosh on the Scallop Carbonara for your entree (dinner only), and round out your meal with the Banana Foster Bread Pudding.
Alamo Drafthouse is, arguably, the best movie theater of all time. What other theatre has the ultimate cinephile staff, a zero talking or texting policy, and Space Jam Cereal Parties? Nowhere, that’s where. For $20 Alamo’s running a pretty spectacular HRW special of a three course meal plus a free movie ticket to another movie of your choice in the future. The best part about Alamo’s HRW menu? The items are inspired by movies! My favorites are the Hello, Cuban Sandwich (inspired by Scarface) and the Supreme Leader Shake (inspired by Star Wars: The Last Jedi).
You almost can’t say ‘Houston’ without mentioning one of its crowning families, the Goode’s. Known for ridiculously delicious restaurants spanning nearly every type of cuisine, if you’re craving seafood, you can’t go wrong here. Make sure that you chow down on the Campechana to start, and snag the uber drool-worthy Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie for dessert…maybe even just buy another whole one (or six!) to go.
I’ve got one word for you, “popcorn,” and at Americas it’s a very distinctive design choice. Huge, faux popcorn kernels adorn the dining room walls of Americas giving a whimsical flair to this otherwise incredibly upscale restaurant. Munch on the Fish Tacos for lunch or the Churrasco de Pollo for dinner and, no matter what, end your meal with the Tres Leches for dessert.
Paleo and Keto aren’t just diet fads, they’re a true lifestyle choice, and Ruggles Black caters exclusively to my inner gluten-free caveman. Believe me when I tell you that I’ve waited over an hour just to eat the Pan Roasted Brussel Sprouts and the Nutella Keto Pie – they are absolute must-haves.
Are your fingers twitching and your mouth watering? Well then, what are you waiting for?! My six choices above are merely a handful of options from the over 250 restaurants participating in Houston Restaurant Weeks, so your dining options are truly endless.
