Austin’s famous for more than just live music — it’s home to fun urban landscapes, a vibrant nightlife, and sprawling greenbelts. This may be why Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, drawing in creatives, tech, and people looking to live in a city that knows how to enjoy the outdoors during the day and celebrate at night.

The Capitol

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that even holds true for our State Capitol building. Open to the public by 1888, the Texas Capitol boasts beautiful grounds, historic monuments, and a stunning building you could explore for hours.

Zilker Park

Nestled just south of downtown, Zilker Park holds over 300 acres of land where Austin comes to play.  When it’s not being used for picnics, pickup soccer games, or a dog haven, you’ll find these lands home to festivals and events such as Austin City Limits Music Festival, Trail of Lights, and Blues on the Green. Don’t forget to check out Barton Springs pool, a natural spring-fed pool that keeps Austinites cool during the summer months. For hiking enthusiasts, you can also access the greenbelt from the park, offering miles of hiking and watering holes. Click here to see how you can spend an entire day at Zilker Park.

Food Trailer Parks

If you’re looking for a way to experience a variety of foods in a close setting, a food trailer park is a perfect way to try your hand (and stomach) at everything. Popular trailer parks include The Picnic off Barton Springs (try Coat and Thai), the South First Trailer Park (grab desert at Manoli’s), or the two trailer parks off Rainey St.

Comedy Clubs

A trip isn’t a getaway without a few laughs. Austin offers up a variety of comedy venues to tickle your funny bone. For improv fans, check out the Hideout Theatre, home to the best improv narrative formats and troupe-based shows. If you’re more of a standup enthusiast, the Velveeta Room will be a great place for you to catch touring comics and Austin’s funniest comedians. If you prefer SNL-style skits and sketches, Austin’s famous Esther’s Follies is home to dynamic musical numbers, topical humor, and hilarious bits.

Rainey Street

Once a small residential street, Rainey Street is now known for one of the most bustling nightlife spots in town. You can enjoy a very walk-able stroll from all the restaurants, bars, and food trailers this street has to offer. Try the sausage at Banger’s or enjoy a mint julep at Half Step. Whatever your choice is, Rainey Street will offer good times.

Lady Bird Lake

Renamed from Town Lake in 2007 in honor of Lady Bird Johnson, Lady Bird Lake boasts over 11.5 hike and bike trails that run around the lake completely, a perfect way to get outdoors and explore the city from the trails. Enjoy stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking by renting from one of the local shops near the water. You can view the largest urban bat colony from the trails under the South Congress Bridge every evening from March to November.
