After a long work week we all deserve to getaway for the weekend. Puerto Rico offers the most convenient weekend getaway, just a short flight from Florida. Best part? As a territory of the United States, there’s no passport required. Puerto Rico is known for its rich culture and stunning beaches, so the convenience of this tropical destination is just one of the many benefits the island has to offer.

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is a must on your weekend to-do list, and spending an entire day exploring the historic city is easy. Since the international airport is just a couple miles away, it’s a no brainer that this should be your first stop. Check into your hotel at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Juan Hotel & Casino and stay close to the city, or check into the Caribe Hilton for a more secluded San Juan experience. Shortly after check-in, find a tour or rent a car for the day, as you’ll quickly realize simply the sights of San Juan are an excursion of their own. The city radiates history and culture, and there’s no better place to experience this than the Old City. There are so many strips of shops, art galleries and places to eat here! Grab an authentic bite at the wonderful La Fonda del Jibarito on Sol Street and dine like a local. Walk around Old San Juan’s colorful streets and venture into the many historic landmarks, such as the Museum at Casa Blanca and the Capilla del Cristo Viejo. After learning about Ponce De Leon and his family at Casa Blanca, venture over to where he currently is entombed. Built in the 1700s, this tiny cathedral is known for its healing powers and has been a main attraction to tourists for hundreds of years.

The beaches in Puerto Rico are perfect to relax, swim, sunbathe, and even catch some waves.

The capital and largest city also has the lengthiest strip of beaches on the island! Coronado Beach is reminiscent of Miami Beach with its vibrance, thick sand and abundance of activities nearby. The beaches are lined with trendy spots to enjoy a drink and casinos for a day filled with fun. If you want a more laid back beach experience, Ocean Park Beach is the place to go. There are tons of places to lay out and the waves are great for surfing.

After a day of exploration and fun in the sun, San Juan transforms into the night. If you feel like dancing head to La Placita de Santurce where you can experience authentic live salsa music. The strip acts as a marketplace by day and an island block party by night. The streets fill with people and the music takes over, making it reminiscent of Bourbon Street.

El Yunque National Forest

On your second day in Puerto Rico venture out of the city to explore the depths of the island. Just a short car trip away from San Juan is North America’s only tropical rainforest, El Yunque. You can choose to hike through the lush landscapes of El Yunque or take a jeep ride through the forest for a quicker and more adventuresome exploration. Stepping into the rainforest after spending the day in the city is a transformative experience, and from here you can take one of the many trails up the mountain and listen to the Cascada La Mina waterfall in the distance. El Yunque is home to hundreds of different plants, and if you look high into the canopies you might catch a glimpse of the beautiful Puerto Rican Parrot. This national rain forest is a true testament to the magic of Puerto Rico.

After your hike, hop back in your jeep and take a scenic trip along the Puerto Rican coast. As you drive through Rio Grande your eyes can feast upon the vast stretches of sand that meet the Atlantic. There are plenty of places to park and stop to enjoy a roadside treat. Stay and watch the sunset for the perfect final touch to your weekend getaway.

There are so many things to do in Puerto Rico, but it’s still possible to experience much of what the island has to offer in one weekend. Your weekend getaway is just a short plane ride away, so what are you waiting for?
