Higher Than the Clouds

Located on the higher elevations surrounding Haleakala – the island’s highest peak – is Upcountry Maui. Throughout the area’s winding roads, you’ll find eclectic towns, fertile farms and a thriving culinary and arts scene.
In Hawaiian, Haleakala means “house of the sun” and at 10,023 feet above sea level this dormant volcano is a natural wonder. Many visitors make the early morning drive to the Haleakala Visitor Center to witness one the most epic sunrises. A guided hike along Haleakala’s protected trails offer visitors a chance to observe unique flora and fauna.
Within the Upcountry region is the quaint and rustic town of Kula. Where you can explore farms of sweet-smelling lavender and botanical gardens filled with blooming carnations, wild protea and birds of paradise. Visit Surfing Goat Dairy – a working farm making over 25 cheeses and truffles. Walk among the sugar canes at Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Farm and Distillery to learn how Ocean Vodka is produced.
Colorful storefronts and boutiques can be found in Paia. This vibrant little town offers the best place to find unique souvenirs, handmade jewelry and locally produced art. Spend the day browsing the many shops, galleries and ethnic eateries.
