Timmins is perhaps best known as the former home of country music legend Shania Twain, and if you’re a fan, you can head on over to the city’s public library to see a permanent exhibit of her achievements and several glamorous stage outfits. This northern Ontario mining town is also a fantastic spot for viewing stars of a different kind – thanks to low light pollution, you have a good chance of witnessing the magnificent aurora borealis.

Miles of river systems and more than 500 lakes make the region an ideal location for paddling, fishing, and general outdoor adventures, whether you prefer hunting, fishing or birdwatching. Learn to wakeboard at Timmins Wake Park, and then keep your eyes peeled for beavers, mink, marten, and otters frolicking in the waterways of Kettle Lakes Park and the Hersey Lake Conservation Area, where you’ll also spot loons and great blue herons. Don’t forget to check out the expansive wildlife sanctuary at the year-round Cedar Meadows Resort and Spa, located on the shores of the Mattagami River. Hop up on a tractor-drawn wagon and get up close with moose, deer, elk, bison, and mountain goats in an unforgettably pristine outdoor setting.
